High School Mentors Lead 6th Graders in Reach for the Stars Program

Reach for the Stars, which comes from The Ophelia Project, recognizes mentoring as an important vehicle for inspiring youth to initiate positive change. Mentoring provides that important bridge - it lets youth know that someone cares, someone is invested in their personal success. The program is designed to help students develop a positive self-identity, successful conflict resolution skills, and healthy trusting relationships. REACH FOR THE STARS has been created to help 6th grade students understand the social and cultural forces that will invite them, over the next 5 years, to hide or change their True Selves.

The reality is that more and more students/adolescents are prey to depression, unhealthy relationships (or at least ones that could benefit from healthier interactions), eating disorders, addictions and self-harm behaviors than ever before.  Unfortunately, they live in an image-obsessed and media saturated culture that is often sending messages that are not consistent with the Christian based values and messages we promote. This culture can tend to stifle their creative spirit and natural intelligence, and ultimately have a negative impact on their self-esteem.

With Reach for the Stars, 6th grade students are mentored by specially selected and trained high-school students (these mentors are from Sacred Heart Academy with school counselor, Mrs. Emily Johnson and St. Xavier High School with school counselor, Mrs. Amber Wissing). It is designed to help these young women and men discuss and discern what is important to them, who they really are (their identity), and most importantly how to live out their values and keep their true selves

The program uses experiential exercises and takes place over three time periods on three different dates which have been worked out to take place over the course of a month. Thank you to our high school mentors and Lifetime Eagle alums who have returned to work with our students!
