Test Scores

This school year the Archdiocese of Louisville is again using the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) Growth test to understand and monitor each student’s academic progress. As per Archdiocesan recommendations, our Holy Trinity students in Grades K - 2 were assessed in both Growth Math and MAP Reading Fluency.

What is the MAP Growth Math assessment?
The Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Growth Math Test is a computer-based assessment created by NWEA. MAP is an adaptive assessment, not a standardized assessment. This means that the program provides a unique set of test questions to each student based on his or her ongoing performance. As the student responds to questions, the test responds to the students by adjusting the difficulty of the test up or down. This continues until the program has determined the upper limit of each student’s skills and knowledge in math content.

Student MAP Growth Math: Understanding the RIT Score
When students finish their Growth Math test, they receive a number called a RIT Score. The higher the RIT Score, the more achievement the student has in the area of math. When reviewing your child’s report, you can pay attention to how your child’s RIT Score compares to the scores of other Archdiocesan students and how it compares with national testing norms. While it can be informative to compare your child to peers, the true usefulness of RIT Scores comes in allowing
parents and teachers to see what content has been mastered, and what the student is ready to learn next. In no way do RIT Scores indicate intelligence or measure your child’s future potential.

Growth Over Time
We strive to see one year’s worth of academic growth for each student every school year. In this way, the growth of each student is the focal point of our exceptional educators at Holy Trinity. Just like taking your child to a well-check appointment where they compare weight and height to national averages, the RIT Score enables us to keep an official growth chart for your child’s academic performance in math. As
we continue to take the MAP Growth Math assessment and accumulate more scores for our students, we will hone our understanding of their individualized progress over time. To support this, we take MAP three times per year: Fall, Winter, and Spring.

How will Holy Trinity use these scores?
MAP Growth results allow students, parents, and teachers to see what content has been mastered and what the student is ready to learn next. While we hope for accurate RIT Scores, we recognize that other factors may impact a student’s MAP performance, including fatigue, health, test anxiety, motivation, or distractibility. We know that one low test score is not indicative of an academic concern. Just like adults, students will have good and bad days. For these reasons, MAP results are just one tool we use to understand and monitor our students’ growth. Using formative and summative assessments, work samples, and classroom observations, our educators continuously work to improve the educational experiences at Holy Trinity to better fit what our students need and are ready for.

What about MAP Reading Fluency?
The MAP Reading Fluency assessment is a little different from the MAP Growth test, and does not provide an overall RIT Score. Instead, the assessment provides information on if your child is below grade level, at grade level, or exceeding grade level on a variety of skill areas, including listening comprehension, vocabulary, and phonological awareness. This information will be provided to you at your child’s fall parent-teacher conference.
