Mission/Service Learning Program

Mission/Service Learning Program

Our mission is to teach our children that our calling as Catholics is to serve God by sharing our time, talent and treasure with others less fortunate. The goal of our program is to show the students how to serve others by using their gifts through service learning.

Each grade has a mission project/social service agency that they serve throughout the year.  Each mission is chosen to coincide with the seven principles of Catholic Social Teaching:
  • Dignity of the Human Person
  • Call to Family, Community and Participation
  • Rights and Responsibilities
  • Preferential Option for and with People who are Poor
  • Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers
  • Solidarity
  • Care for God's Creation

Please contact Aimee Schwiers @ (502) 552-5295 or aimee_tilford@yahoo.com, Mission/Service Learning Program Chair to volunteer.

Our Student Council, comprised of 6th-8th grade students, also leads school-wide initiatives throughout the year.
  • Halloween Scare Out Hunger Drive for food to support a local food pantry (varies between Dare to Care & St. Vincent dePaul)
  • Christmas Drive for an organization chosen by students (included Hosparus, Bears on Patrol, etc. in the past)
  • Christmas Cards are created to be delivered to those served by homeless shelters during the holiday season
  • Valentine's Day "We Are Love" Conferences Event that includes writing letters to vets served at the VA Hospital
  • Lenten Rice Bowl Program for Catholic Relief Services - www.crsricebowl.org/
  • Lenten WaterStep Used Shoe Drive to support clean water initiatives with WaterStep - http://waterstep.org
  • Mayor's Give a Day of Service projects in each grade level in April
  • Book Drive to support school library summer reading goals and local service initiatives, including Catholic Charities Migration and Refugee Services and CC's Young Families
  • End of Year Used/Broken Crayon & Writing Utensils Drive for the Crayon Initiative  (http://thecrayoninitiative.org/)  and Terra Cycle

Additionally, each year, our 7th graders participate in a local Louisville Service Day and our 8th graders are able to participate in a 3-day Kentucky service mission trip to the Appalachian areas of Kentucky.
  • 7th graders deliver the school's canned and boxed food drive donations from our annual "Scare Out Hunger" drive with a day of service at local food pantries, gardens, and service missions, including St. Vincent dePaul and Catholic Charities.
  • 8th graders repair homes during their days of service. In partnership with Hand in Hand Ministries, our Counselor and Director of Student Activities invite 8th graders to apply for one of two annual trips in November or March. Each trip involves 25-35 students working to repair and improve three to five homes in Eastern Kentucky communities. Parents, teachers, school and parish staff, and parishioners are invited to serve as chaperones on this trip.
