Grade Overview

5th Grade

The teachers of the fifth grade students believe that all students can achieve at high levels, and we strive to offer a learning environment that promotes opportunities for students to work to their potentials. We emphasize Higher Order Thinking Skills throughout the curriculum and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of the students’ different learning styles and abilities. Communication is strong among the teachers of each discipline at this level to ensure a continuous progression of the scope and sequence of the curriculum.

We believe in the importance of participating fully in a community. The fifth grade students participate in service learning projects through their missions. Throughout the year, the fifth grade students visit senior residents at the Masonic Home. Each class is involved in planning several weekly masses for the entire school and prepared a special “living rosary” in honor of Rosary Month.

We believe in a learning environment that offers positive nurturing and encouragement. Focus at this level is on developing study skills, independent thinking, and cooperative learning. Language Arts stresses mastery in reading comprehension, vocabulary, listening, and writing. Math stresses basic skills and conceptual understanding. The focus in Social Studies is on U. S. History for the fifth grade. In Science, students explore and investigate life and physical science. Religion for the fifth grade focuses on the sacraments. Students then get the opportunity to implement this new knowledge through the Junior Achievement's program Biz Town.
