R.E.A.D. Program

The READ Program (Reading Enrichment and Development), otherwise known as the “Book Club,” is designed for children with mild reading difficulties in grades K-3. This reading program creates a secure small group setting for each child to reach his/her reading potential at a comfortable pace. The program is common core aligned and incorporates different learning styles for the students using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic activities. Strong phonemic awareness and phonics-based learning are included as important parts of this program. The students become very familiar with phonetic rules and their application through guided repetition of skills. A specific progression of skills provides the building blocks for a solid phonics program. The students begin with the consonant sounds and then learn the short vowel sounds, long vowel sounds, blends and consonant digraphs, controlling r sounds, and the vowel digraphs and diphthongs.

The development of vocabulary and word meaning is also a major focus of the READ Program. The students are exposed to many different comprehension skills in class that support the Benchmark Literacy series used in the primary classrooms. Board games are used to target skills such as; finding the main idea, predicting outcomes, context clues, fact and opinion, sequencing, and cause and effect. An added bonus to the program is the reading lab that is used to reinforce the skills taught in class. The reading lab contains computer programs such as iReady, Earobics and Essential Basic Skills. The READ Program has been very successful in helping young readers to become more proficient in their reading fluency and comprehension.
