KYA to Present Bill to End Death Penalty in Kentucky

Our YMCA KYA, Kentucky Youth Assembly, students have been working since August to research various bill ideas for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. After reviewing and voting on a variety of ideas, students settled on the idea to end the death penalty. The 15 students have written a proposal that calls for the end to the death penalty, inviting Kentucky to be the 19th state in the USA to abolish it.

During their research and practice time, students have presented their idea to their 6th, 7th, and 8th grade peers to gain feedback and perspective from peer voters. They also met with Father Dick Sullivan, who has worked extensively with prison care and Catholics working to end the Death Penalty.

The students are very excited to attend the state-wide conference with 800-1000 of their middle school peers on Dec. 4-6. They are especially excited to hopefully present their bill in Frankfort, based on approval and voting from their peers on the 1st night of the conference. Good Luck Students! We are proud of your work!
