Academics

Grade Overview

1st Grade

The first grade year helps to build a strong academic and spiritual foundation upon which to build in the years to come. Differentiated instruction and purposeful lessons help to drive the students to become independent, confident, lifelong learners. First grade teachers implement this instruction in the form of interactive learning centers, shared reading, writer’s workshop, and whole group instruction. Our goal is to create a classroom environment that fosters mutual respect, self-discipline, and life skills. Multiple intelligences are addressed through the use of manipulatives, interactive technology, challenging enrichment activities, and body movement. The first grade classroom has a maximum of 29 students. A part-time instructional assistant is also in each classroom in order to enhance the program and help meet each student’s unique needs.

With our mission in mind, “One in Faith, One Through Learning, One as Community, One by Service, and One for Life,” first grade students participate in a curriculum rich with character development. First grade students work throughout the year to support The Schuhmann Center, which assists families in need. Each month, the students donate items such as blankets, canned goods, and clothing. First grade students assemble and fill Christmas stockings with goodies for the holidays. This is an activity much appreciated by the Schuhmann Center. This facility is available to families from outside Jefferson County who have loved ones in area hospitals.

First graders receive a firm foundation with many interesting, challenging, and fun activities.
